Mission: Building Community Through Fitness and Art

At Athens Recovery Warriors, our mission is clear and resolute: to create a thriving and supportive community through the transformative power of fitness and art. We believe that true healing and recovery extend beyond individual efforts, encompassing the strength of a united community. Our journey began with a simple idea that grew into a powerful movement, driven by a deep desire to help individuals in their recovery journey.

Our History: From Basement to Community

Athens Recovery Warriors traces its roots back to a humble beginning in Wesley Martin's basement. What started as a personal refuge for training and sweating quickly evolved into an integral part of his own recovery. In 2016, a spark ignited within Wesley to give back and provide his peers in treatment centers with a positive avenue for connection and personal growth. He envisioned a space where health, confidence, and resilience could be nurtured, serving as valuable tools in the fight against the disease of addiction.

Wesley's journey took shape when he began coaching boxing fitness classes at The Potter's House, and thus, "Recovery Warriors" was born. The years went by, and in 2022, fate brought Wesley and Jeff together at a CARES Connect event. United by a shared vision of an active and sober community in Athens, the two collaborated to expand their aspirations beyond treatment centers. Their aim was to create a welcoming space where those in recovery, alongside allies, veterans, first responders, and their families, could train together and foster a sense of camaraderie.

In 2023, the evolution continued, and Recovery Warriors transformed into Athens Recovery Warriors, a registered 501c3 Non-Profit organization. Our impact grew as we extended our reach to two treatment centers, The Potter's House and Twin Lakes Recovery Center. We established a vibrant community weightlifting group and introduced "Recovery Resonance," a monthly sober open mic night, to celebrate the power of creative expression in recovery.

Present and Future: Embracing Growth and Empowerment

Our journey has just begun. As we step into the future, we remain unwavering in our commitment to fostering a community where fitness and art act as catalysts for empowerment and connection. Plans are in motion to launch yoga and kickboxing classes in September, further enriching our offerings.

Our aspirations don't stop there. We envision a future where our impact spans beyond the confines of treatment centers and community groups. Our goals include acquiring more equipment for our programs and securing a van to efficiently transport resources. Ultimately, we dream of having a dedicated brick-and-mortar space in the heart of the community—a space where healing, growth, and connection can flourish.

We recognize the financial challenges that can hinder access to specialized fitness and coaching programs. Gym memberships can be a barrier, especially for those transitioning out of treatment or early in their recovery journey. Athens Recovery Warriors is committed to bridging this gap by offering FREE fitness and art groups, empowering individuals to overcome obstacles and embark on a path of well-being.

Join us in our mission to build a community where strength, support, and transformation are shared values. Together, we're rewriting stories, empowering lives, and proving that recovery is not just a destination—it's a journey we embrace together.
